July 11, 1996 Thursday
Meg, my roommate sounded like she was coughing up a hairball in the middle of the night. It happened several times. I thought I was going to have to do a heimlich. Apparently her retainer is interfering with her breathing - it sounds like nobody has mentioned it before. Sheesh.
Rode up the three mile hill to Les Baux. At the top of the hill, before Les Baux we came first to a winery where the wine runs out of hoses and you can fill up any receptacle you bring. They also had some funky bottles in the shape of grapes. All I could think was "don't want to be hauling that around for two weeks." Stopped at the "Cathedral of Images" - photographs and music projected in an old limestone quarry. The theme changes, this time it is art from the Sistine Chapel.
Les Baux had lots of gift shops filled with lavender, herbs de provence, pottery, Provencal print cloth and soap. Very pretty.
Rode down the other side of the hill to Arles - Van Gogh territory again. Sunflowers everywhere, fields of lavender and orchards. Had a quick bite in Arles with the two sisters. A fierce headwind on the way from Arles to St. Remy made the easy, flat ride exhausting.
At dinner it was suggested that we do the long ride to Pont-du-Gard tomorrow rather than on day 3 (long=52 miles).
