July 18, 1996 Thursday
This morning I headed for the Marais - lots of great-looking food stores and very expensive boutiques. I stopped to see a photo exhibit on the way; it turned out to be photos of WWII from someone-whose-name-I-didn't-recognize to Cartier Bresson (at the Hotel De Sully).
The Jewish district around Paris' "Rue de Rosiers" is a condensed characature. There's a big poster: "Moshiach is coming," it says in French. But the whole scene runs for only about 100 meters along one street. I had a really bad felafel for lunch. After hearing Hebrew spoken for an hour I was confused and and sure my French was even more screwed up.
Had my first ever experience with a non-QUERTY keyboard and it was none-too-pleasant. It's no use being a touch typist and an internet geek if you can't use the keyboard. I was thinking of sending some e-mail from the George Pompidou Biblioteque but dealing with that keyboard was too great an obstacle.
At the Pompidou Centre. Finally figured out that "nature morte" does not mean dead nature. Means still life. I also noticed a preponderance of penis art. Or maybe it was just me? I don't think so. I was sure that I missed a floor of the museum but I tried to find the entrance and couldn't find it. It was frustrating - I remembered the exhibit space being larger but couldn't find any more of it. Later I looked at a guide and it seems that there's another floor somewhere - although who knows how you get access to it.
