Scholastic: Literacy Place
No, I did not design this site. However, if you're looking for a detailed description of Literacy Place, Scholastic's new core Language Arts product you can see it all here. I managed a team producing content for the 24 disk CD-ROM project that was the technology component. (See Smart Place, Grades 3-6)
"Demystifying Computer Science..."
Download ComputerMagic Program (approx. 3.1MB, requires a Macintosh II or better.) My Master's Thesis. The object of this project was to demystify computer science for ordinary computer users. To do this an instructional multimedia program was designed which demonstrated the interaction of hardware and software in a simple model of computer processing. Game-like activities were included to build user understanding of the concepts. The program was user tested in two very different learning environments: a science museum (The Exploratorium in San Francisco) and a middle school's computer lab (The Mill Valley Middle School in Marin County, CA). The thesis discusses issues which affected the design of this multimedia program including instructional design, cognitive theory, and some basic concepts of information processing.
